Think Fallout 4 style – if you’ve played that the interface and setup will feel right at home. Firstly make sure the team are fed, then you’re released to build as you see fit. Successfully make it back to the warehouse and it opens up the options for giving your companions more comfort, adding workbenches to make and enhance weapons, and even get more exotic with the Chernobylite crystals. Expect to be gunning down roaming enemies all day long and you’ll soon find it’s not that sort of game. Chernobylite’s combat is functional rather than satisfying, and if you inhabit the personality of a scientist forced to scrounge for clues and materials it makes sense. Come across a monster in the form of Chernohosts or Shadows though and you’ll need to shoot quickly to avoid being savaged, assuming you’ve been spotted. Armour can be developed and equipped to add to the sneaky side of exploring, as well as more conventional bullet stopping clothing. Being non-lethal or avoiding conflict altogether usually nets the most rewards, and fortunately there’s a decent camouflage system in play where heading into vegetation will largely mask Igor from sight. He’s a scientist rather than a fighter and it’s his technical skills that are needed the most.

It might be possible to get into gunfights, but they’re rarely the best way to approach objectives, and Igor’s psyche takes a serious hit when killing someone.

Out in the wilds the gameplay is firmly stealth FPS territory. There are quite a few different mechanisms in play at all times and getting the right balance is important to keep the team, and Igor, running smoothly. They need a reason to stay at the base though, so you’ll need to keep them happy and well fed, and that goes doubly for yourself and ensuring your mental wellbeing as much as the physical. Igor isn’t alone in his search, if you make the right decisions for him you’ll engage the support of various characters that will run errands in the background and provide skills training to make you better at scavenging or avoiding enemy patrols.

Every mission takes a full day, whether successful or not, and nabbing materials and resources during them is the key to upgrading the facilities back at base. Planning is done from a warehouse which acts as the home for the base building side of the game, and missions are selected to head out into the various locations accessible in the region. Pursued by a seemingly invincible soldier in black, and aided by those he finds on his travels, Igor’s adventure in Pripyat is a strange and disturbing one which may, or may not, lead to the truth.Ĭhernobylite’s setup is interesting in that it’s broken up into days with the sole overall purpose being to gather information from the CEZ and plan a heist to get into the reactor. The strange dark green crystal-like substance has the power to create wormholes to allow instant travel, and Igor plans to make the most of this ability to get into the closed off reactor to uncover what’s been happening. Alongside that he’ll be uncovering uses for the titular Chernobylite that’s started appearing around the deserted town. He’s heading back into the CEZ to find his missing fiancée which sounds simple enough, but will see him have to contend with soldiers guarding the area as well as strange monsters that have started appearing across the zone.

We liked the PC release finding the atmosphere and multiple endings quite unique, so can the PS5/Series X|S match that?Ī quick recap if you’ve not hit the hyperlink (or don’t have a clue what this is about)… You’re playing as Igor, a nuclear scientist that worked at Chernobyl before the accident in the 1980’s. This survival-base building-stealth-FPS-horror game brought some interesting ideas to the fore, not least the one-to-one recreation of the actual Chernobyl Exclusion Zone (CEZ) for players to explore. Having undergone nips and tucks since the original release it’s made its way over to the newest generation of consoles, as well as being updated to the Enhanced Edition on PC. If you missed our PC review of Chernobylite during the summer last year, or overlooked the Xbox One/PS4 appearance towards the end of 2021, then now might be the time to check it out.
